When New Year Resolutions fail
As we welcome the year of 2019 I'm pretty sure most of us buy into the notion of endings and new beginnings.
"New year, new me!"
"New year, who dis?"
Coming closer to the end of the year we tell ourselves that all the changes we want to make in our lives would just work out better if we started in the new year. We tell ourselves that the new year would bring a new attitude, more discipline, more focus, or more change. So we give ourselves a few more months, a few more weeks, a few more days to continue our bad habits and continue living half lives before we get up and do something about it.
"In 2019 I'm living my best life!"
The reality of this is that the New Year is essentially just one new day after another. It is one day added to all the days you have already lived. When we constantly wait for the new year to actually check ourselves and to make those crucial steps towards our goals, we lose each day, each week, and each month we have coming up to the new year. We lose precious time.
So what's my advice?
Drop those New Year resolutions and start digging for GOALS!
Step 1
I've realized that I have a very short attention span and I need to be constantly reminded of my ultimate goal. Therefore I came up with three broad words that I hope to manifest in every part of my life. These words become a simple mantra that would bring me back mentally to my purpose or my ultimate goal. My 2019 mantra sounds like this:
FOCUS
CONSISTENCY
BALANCE

These three words remind me of what I realized were my shortcomings as of late. They apply in my personal life, professional life and social life and I have decided to work on improving on these.
Now that I have a short, quick and easy reminder, something that reminds me anytime I fall off my path
Step 2
I remember things better when I write them down. Knowing this, I decided to clearly outline on paper any smaller goals that I would like to achieve in the different aspects of my life. This firstly helps me to organize my goals (something I will explain more thoroughly later), visually commit it to memory, and put these goals out into the universe by writing them down.

Step 3
Remember when I mentioned organizing my goals? So I selected six main categories that are of importance to me and wrote them down. Under each category I wrote three goals I would like to achieve in the respective category. These are more specific goals, such as spending more time in the office as a work goal, or meal prepping as a fitness goal.
Having these smaller, specific goals written down in a place you can go always back to makes you feel more inclined to put your efforts towards them.
Step 4
Goal Setting to the NOW
My Real Estate director, Ryan sends us motivational posts in the group chat from time to time just to give us a gentle push when he feels like we need it. One day he sent a picture that I think really changed the game for me. It showed us a really fantastic way to set a flexible and realistic timeline for my goals that makes it easy to keep on track.

Someday goal
Five year goal
One year goal
Monthly goal
Weekly goal
Daily goal
RIGHT NOW!
This now gives you something to think about every day. You think backwards from what you ultimately want to what you can do right now to achieve that. It seems really far fetched when you say it like that, but when you really start thinking about this strategy, it makes so much sense. Each day there is something that you can do that brings you closer to your weekly goal. Each weekly goal somehow relates to a desired achievement for the month. Every month you would work on something that helps you achieve a larger goal for the year. And each year you achieve something that helps you along you path of purpose.
These are the four steps I took to rule out the New Year resolution fad and start taking responsibility for the use of my time and taking real steps towards "living my best life"in the New Year.
"You are never too old to set a new goal, to dream a new dream."
- C S Lewis
Bonus step : Document your journey
Each W is motivation to keep going
Each L is a lesson, try a different approach
My last piece of advice is to myself :
Stay Focused
Be Consistent
Find Balance
I hope this inspires you on your journey. Be blessed in this New Year <3
